Authentic Watches Strengthened by Surge in Online Searches

Authentic WatchesDespite lingering skepticism about the global economy, Internet search engines report a surge of interest in luxury watch brands, with global search volume on the rise for makers of high-end authentic watches.

According to Geneva’s IC Agency World Watch Report, interest in luxury authentic watches has continued to grow, despite a floundering economy.  After analyzing 25 luxury watch manufacturers, the study found that Jaeger LeCoultre, Audmars Piguet and Blancpain were the leading brands being searched online.

The report followed the search trends for some 120 models, including the Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso, which accounted for 8.2 percent of total search volume among the group.   This classically designed watch is unique in that its case can be inverted by the wearer and worn on the reverse side, allowing for more versatility and the appearance of owning two watches.  This elegant series of men’s and women’s watches is available in solid gold, two-tone and solid steel, and in either a precision quartz or manual-winding movement.  It is a sign of these economic times that the most popular model of luxury authentic watches being sought out online is also the most practical.

The second most popular model was the Royal Oak, which is made by Audemars Piquet.  Another interesting finding in this study was that over 300,000 people on social networking sites subscribe to the fan pages for popular brands of luxury authentic watches.

IWC Takes the Cake

The end of every year is a fun time to see what brands are the best, worst, who got married, divorced, had a baby and more. So, it goes that there are polls for best luxury watch brand and on one conducted by Luxist.com, IWC came in on the top. IWC beat out other brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger Le-Coultre and Patek Philippe.

IWC (International Watch Company) may not be the most trendy or popular watch line, but it is one of the most revered. Made just for men, IWC was founded by an American ex-pat in 1868 in Switzerland.  IWC watches are understated yet made with excellent craftsmanship and this combination has won them many admirers among those that can afford to own one.

IWC seeks to make watches for those that “attach value to mechanics and the highest quality.” They are sporty watches but not sporty looking; they are elegant and extremely well-made. Collection names like the Big Pilot, Ingenieur, Pilots Chronograph and the Portuguese are highly acclaimed.

The Pilot, along with the Aquatimer are diving themed watches, while the other collections tend to relate more to classic “thinking person” timepieces.

The Vintage collection offers watches with a classic cockpit look, and the Specialties collection includes the Grande Complications model, with 21 functions and displays, including a perpetual calendar for the next 500 years.

IWC does not mass produce its watches which makes them retain a sense of understated class; something that these days is not always that highly prized. Fans of IWC watches are fans because they love the way the watch is made and how it looks, not because they want to turn heads with it.

Porsche Family Donates Luxury Watches

The actual, real Porsche family must be large and generous because members recently donated 49 women’s luxury watches and men’s watches to London-based auctioneer Bonhams. All proceeds from these sales will go to benefit the Oncology Research Department of the Robert Bosch Hospital in Stuttgart, Germany.Porsche_logo

If you look at the Porsche logo you’ll notice that the name Stuttgart is emblazoned on it; that’s because although many people may mistake this luxury automobile manufacturer to be Italian, its origins are German and the company is based in Stuttgart, Germany.

Some of the luxury watches that were sold came from well-known brands like Panerai, Eterna, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger LeCoultre, Breitling, Omega Watches and even some from the watch branch of Porsche called Porsche Design. The estimated total value for these 49 watches is about $170,000.

Panerai watches are some of the most coveted in the watch industry. They are not mass produced and only recently have become commonly available in the U.S. Their extra large faces and simple, classic designs have made them extremely popular men’s watches.

porschedesignwatchTAG Heuer is the one watch brand that has a partnership with Porsche and produces a Carrera and Grand Carrera line. Panerai has a partnership with Ferrari, while Breitling and Bentley have joined hands.

Breitling is a brand that has been around for a long time and although started out and remains dedicated to producing men’s watches for aviation pilots, Breitling watches have become quite the status symbol as well.

Audemars Piguet, Omega watches and Jaeger LeCoultre are other brands which all have strong footing in the luxury watch world and will be hot items at this auction which takes place on December 2, 2009.

Aside from luxury watches, there will be other items for sale; the full list totals 280 items. Although the auction will take place in London you can register online at Bonhams.com.

Audemars Piguet Creates Pride of Mexico Watch

Well, it certainly seems as though the luxury Swiss watch brand Audemars Piguet is making efforts to spread its name and products all around the world. Just recently, the brand announced its sponsorship of the Russian ballet as well as signing the ballet’s principal dancer as a new brand ambassador; perhaps the first time ever a watch brand has done such a thing.APpride-of-mexico watch

And now, AP (as Audemars Piguet in known in the industry) is making a special “Pride of Mexico” watch to celebrate Mexico’s 200 years of Independence from Spain.

Using the infamously popular Royal Oak Offshore style, AP will come out with this limited edition watch, obviously geared toward the wealthy Mexican market.

APpride-of-mexico-watchtitaniumAvailable in just 300 pieces, this watch is created from 19K rose gold or titanium and comes in a 42mm size. The rose gold series will offer 100 pieces and the titanium series will have 200.

The standard Royal Oak features remain; meaning the octagonal shape, steel edges, and use of hexagonal screws. What will make this watch unique are the color of the hour hands (green) and the red chronograph seconds hand, set against a white dial finished in “Mega Tappiserie” as these are the colors of the Mexican flag. Engraved on the case back is the Angel of Independence that commemorates the 200 years.

The watch runs on the Audemars Piguet Calibre 2326/2804 automatic chronograph movement and comes with a black crocodile strap with green stitching and either a gold or steel buckle. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters and has 38 hours of power reserve.APpride-of-mexicoback

With only 300 of these special “Pride of Mexico” watches being made, they are sure to go for more than other watches from the Royal Oak Offshore collection, but with that many, if not more millionaires in Mexico, sales should not be a problem.

Audemars Piguet’s New Brand Ambassador

It is common practice for luxury watch brands to “hire” celebrities as their brand spokespeople. When a celebrity is seen wearing a certain watch, people are more apt to buy it. Omega has many celebrity ambassadors, such as Cindy Crawford, George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Michael Phelps and others. TAG Heuer does also, including athletes Tiger Woods and Maria Sharapova. Tissot has female race car driver Danica Patrick and so on. Ok, you get the picture. So, it’s no surprise that Audemars Piguet, one of the top notch luxury watch manufacturers also wants a famous face to sport their goods, but their recent choice is a bit surprising.AP new ambassador

Audemars recently confirmed that it signed a three year deal for sponsorship of the Russian prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharoba and the place where she dances; the Russian Bolshoi Ballerina Theater. It’s probably safe to say that this is the first time a watch brand has brought on a ballerina as well as a theater. Although the figures themselves may be an experimental move, the country in which they reside is not. Russia represents a vast market for luxury goods, watches included. AP is figuring that those who are part of Russia’s elite and go to the ballet, are the same ones that can afford and want to buy high end watches.

It is assumed that advertisements for Audemars Piguet watches will be in the programs handed out and perhaps also in the theater itself.

Speaking of the Russian elite, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has quite the collection of luxury watches and although he has recently given a few away, he surely has enough money to re-stock. During a press conference a few weeks ago, a factory worker asked Putin for something to remember him by… his watch. Rather than look bad, Putin took it off and handed over a Blancpain watch worth about $8,000 dollars.

The most expensive luxury watch that Putin has been spotted wearing is a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar valued at about $51,500 dollars.

The new Audemars Piguet Ambassador Svetlana Zakharova was born in the Ukrainian city of Lutsk and has been dancing since the age of 10.

Luxury Watches Raising Money for Charities

Both Audemars Piguet and IWC have recently donated special watches to raise money for charities.

The Royal Oak Abruzzo Tourbillon Chronograph Watch by AP was auctioned off to support the Abruzzo nel Cuore’ foundation.  Audemars Piguet created this one a kind watch specifically for the event and since it has “Royal Oak” in the name, you can be sure that it retains certain features from this famous collection, such as the hour markers and hands, as well as the “mega tapestry” pattern on the dial. This modern looking watch also brings new elements not often found in the Royal Oak line, into play, such as a 30 minute chronograpgh and a tourbillon complication. The case is made from titanium and comes with a matching folding buckle. This watch, along with other memorabilia, brought in over $200,000 for the charity.AP Abruzzo Tourbillon Chronograph

Luxury watch maker, IWC (International Watch Company), for the fourth year creates a special edition watch called the “IWC-Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” series. IWC and the Laureus Foundatin first joined hands in 2006 and every year thereafter have worked together to offer kids around the world other alternatives to violence, drug abuse, disease and poverty. This is grand undertaking which is why IWC makes a limited series of 1,000 watches to raise funds for the foundation. As a model for this special series, IWC uses their Portuguese Automatic watch and this year adds a blue dial and blue alligator leather strap. Each watch has a specially engraved caseback that shows the number within the series and a “team spirit” medallion that shows kids with their arms interlinked. This image was done by a 12 year old boy from Sri-Lanka, one of the children that IWC and the Laureus Foundation seeks to help.IWCPortAutoSportsGood

The case of this “IWC-Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” watch measures 42.3 mm and is made from stainless steel. To contrast the blue dial are two silver subdials with blue hands; the subdial on the left indicates small seconds, while the one at the right shows the status of the 7-day power reserve. There is a small date window located at the 6 o’clock position and an IWC-signed folding clasp in stainless steel.

It’s nice to see companies like Audemars Piguet and IWC, who have made millions by selling luxury watches over the years, donate their time, name and products to charities.

Kayne West Gets a Bad Rap… Will Rolex Also?

If you haven’t by now heard about or seen a clip of Kayne’s ridiculous and rude outburst last night at MTV’s 2009 Video Music Awards, you will soon enough. Who does he think he is? His interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for “Best Female Video”, to say that Beyonce had (and deserved) the best female video, was super rude and definitely had racial overtones to it (Taylor is a white girl that sings country music).kanye

It may have been a pathetic attempt to get attention for himself or simply to humiliate Taylor Swift; whatever the reason was, he deserves to be trampled by the press, which he is. Some are saying he was drunk, as he was seen chugging a bottle of Hennessey prior to his rude outburst.

Kayne, a self-proclaimed fashionista, is a fan of Rolex watches. Last night he had on a gold watch, most likely a Rolex. This past summer Kayne made the comment that Rolex would be his signature watch brand.

One of the Rolex watches that he prefers is a customized Rolex Submariner known as the “Black Out” version, saying “It’s a new take on a classic watch.”

The “Black Out” concept is applied to other luxury goods as well as watches. Founded in 2007 by Fabrice Letellier, the idea was born this collector of luxury watches, cars and more, gave some of his “hot wheels”   and his Rolex watch matte black treatments:  blacking them out (as seen here in the photograph). The trend caught on and Letellier started contracting out with high-end watch brands like Rolex, Panerai, Bell & Ross and Audemars Piguet.  He uses PVD and DLC (diamond-like carbon, two low-friction, scratch-proof finishes to coat the watches.

Now, back to Kayne. Even his apology to Taylor Swift and her family (through his blog) was fake; he write” I’m soooo sorry.” Nothing more than a drunken ramble if you ask me. Even though he said Taylor was “talented”, he still said that Beyonce’s video was “the best video of the decade” and basically said that he had every right to express himself, proclaiming “I’m real.”

Ugh. Enough. Let him drag himself down. I’m sure that Rolex, who seems to be the preferred luxury watch brand by most celebrities (see our post about the well-behaved and very polite Jay Z and his Rolex Masterpiece) and gets much free press from those who love and wear the watches, is crossing its fingers hoping that Kayne’s association with the brand doesn’t give it a bad rap.
