Brief history of IWC and their biggest contributions to the watch world

Written by Debbie. Posted in News, Watch Brands

IWC in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

IWC in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

The International Watch Company Schaffhausen – or IWC – has been an innovative force since its inception in Switzerland in 1868, when Boston watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones set up in a factory in Schaffhausen. He made IWC unique by seeking to connect American production with Swiss craftsmanship, rather than following the techniques of French-based watch makers.

Starting with their unique beginnings set far apart from other watch company’s, the International Watch Company has created a reputation as an innovative and technologically inventive manufacturer of watches. IWC Schaffhausen watches reflect a combination of “precision engineering with exclusive design” – characteristics that have enabled the company to grow from an outsider to a leader in watchmaking.

Although F.A. Jones started with pocket watches, IWC’s variety of timepieces has grown. There are now multiple watch families within the IWC brand that boast all of the technological innovations and classic traditions from which the company was built. After IWC made a name for itself with their first pocket watch, the Magique, and their creation of the first watches to display the Pallweber system of digital hours and minutes, they launched the Pilot’s Watch collection in 1936. Throughout the decades, the Portuguese, Ingenieur, Aquatimer, Da Vinci and Portofino watch collections followed. These collections have become iconic models that have been recently updated with automatic movements and more contemporary designs. The updated watches are part of the IWC Vintage Collection. You can browse through all of IWC’s collections here.

The two causes that IWC supports are environmental awareness and youth disadvantages. On its website, IWC states that the company “has a corporate philosophy that embraces ecological responsibility and social commitment.” IWC has achieved international success with their global projects concerning ecological and social matters.

For years now, IWC Schaffhausen has been striving to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions. In 2003, IWC production was moved to two new buildings composed of insulated glass and innovative ventilation that were designed to reduce IWC’s CO2 footprint. Its production facilities have given them certification as a climate-neutral company. Through the use of innovative production technologies and alternative energy use, IWC has been able to reduce emissions by 90 percent.

Not only does IWC strive for environmental impact awareness in the workplace, its employees are rewarded with financial incentives for making individual efforts to reduce their own CO2 footprints in their personal lives as well.

All of IWC Schaffhausen’s efforts to become an environmentally friendly company reflect the root of its philosophy. Georges Kern, CEO IWC Schaffhausen, explains that “beyond the confines of our company, at IWC we aim for similar standards in our response to the environmental challenges of today, supporting landmark projects around the globe.” IWC Schaffhausen is a member of Climate Group, an international non-profit organization that strives to reduce global emissions by implementing a clean industrial revolution. Passion for innovation is reflected in IWC’s research efforts with the “Plastiki” Expedition, which delves into the problems surrounding some of the most environmentally threatened areas on the planet and seeks to reduce plastic waste.

IWC Schaffhausen is also committed to promoting social causes, such as the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, an organization that beings awareness and support for social and physical handicaps in children all over the world. The Charles Darwin Foundation, a cause devoted to preserving the natural ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands, also has the support of the IWC.

IWC Schaffhausen’s passion for ecological and social improvements can only be matched by its passion for exquisite watch manufacturing. Visit IWC’s website for more information about the company’s products and impact.

The 4N MVT01

Written by Debbie. Posted in Authentic Watches, Fashion Watches, Luxury Watches, Men's Watches, News, Style Watches, Watch Brands

With a digital style setting in a mechanical frame, the 4N-MVT01/42 easily stands out amongst the crowd.

Created by the French designer Francois Quentin, the 4N brand first took shape back in 2009, but was not fully developed until 2011. Upon the 4N’s release it quickly became known as one of the world’s most unique designs.

The 4N features a 12 hour display that changes due to Four rotating discs. Four discs indicate the hour, 5 discs indicate minutes and one disc indicates seconds. To make it easy on the eyes, a golden colored rectangle surrounds the time. This outlining is very useful because the other rotating numbers are visible on the watch and without a border showing the numbers  you could easily confuse the time.

The body of the watch is quite large, as are most unique luxury watches. However the 4N is designed in a rectangular case. Think of it as a small little widescreen TV on your wrist. Of course a TV that only shows you the time.

The case is constructed with aluminum and titanium alloys, making it a very sturdy watch.

The movement employs a jump style mechanism to move the discs. With a constant force the mechanism reduces the amount of energy needed to run the watch. The power reserve for the 4N is estimated to be about 237 hours.

Technical Information
• Jumping minutes and hours
• Digital style display by discs
• Double barrels
• Screwed balance D:9.12mm
• Breguet Overcoil balance-spring
• Cadence: 21 600 ALT/hour
• 520 parts
• 86 Jewels
• Power reserve 237 hours
• Finishing: all parts finely decorated

There will only be 16 of these watches produced, available in either 18 carat white gold or platinum. The price has not yet been revealed but with its design and its grade, the 4N will definitely be one of those watches that will come with a golden price tag.

The Dior Chiffre Rouge M05

Written by Debbie. Posted in Authentic Watches, Fashion Watches, Luxury Watches, Men's Watches, News, Style Watches, Watch Brands

Christian Dior, the French design and apparel company recently released a new edition to its Chiffre Rouge collection. The Dior Chiffre Rouge M05 blends simplicity with luxury.

The M05 comes in all black or half red. The case is steel and coated with rubber. This edition has a geometric rotor on the dial.

There is a translucent mineral crystal on the back of the case, allowing for a full view of the mechanisms that run the watch.

The hour dial controller is actually encrusted with crystals, an extra luxury but somewhat unnecessary. But then again it is a luxury watch.

Dior has not yet released all the details for the M05. Like most newly released luxury watches the price has also not yet been released. But judging by the brands history and this particular edition the watch will definitely be high up on the price range.

The M05’s design is simple, the only thing that makes the watch stand out are the colors (black and blood red).

Everything else is quite ordinary, except for the fact that it is a Dior.

A History of Raymond Weil

Written by Debbie. Posted in Authentic Watches, Fashion Watches, Luxury Watches, Men's Watches, More News, News, Style Watches, Watch Brands

All though a fairly new company, Raymond Weil has established itself as one of the world’s finest watch makers.
The company takes its name from its founder Raymond Weil.

Weil, born in 1926 in Geneva Switzerland, joined the Geneva watch company at the age of 23. By 1976 when the watch industry was on a decline, Weil started his own company.

Raymond Weil used his experience to build his company over the years. Incorporating other family members into the company like his son-in-law, Oliver Bernheim. With an increased workforce both loyal and devoted, the Weil brand re-inspired the watch industry.
Weil marketed the brand along with cultural influences. Like their Amadeus collection released in 1983 along with the famous movie.
The Weil brand continued to adapt to changes in society, creating new and unique designs for both men and women.

1976: Raymond Weil creates the company
1982: Weil’s son in law joins the company (Oliver Bernheim).
1983: The Amadeus collection launched
1986: Othello collection released
1988: Traviata collection released
1991: Parsaifal collection released
1994: Precision Movements campaign consolidated with Raymond Weil
1996: W1 collection released
1999: The Celebrate the Movement campaign consolidated with Raymond Weil
2001-03: New Othello and Parsaifal collections
2006: Weil’s grandsons join the company (Elie and Pierre Bernheim)
2009: Ladies Noemia collection
2010: Maestro collection released

The Greatest contribution to the watch world that Raymond Weil has given is itself. The founder started the company at a time when the watch industry seemed to be dying out. The company proved that if you could create luxurious watches both unique and simple then you could survive. Weil watches are neither over the top in design nor bland and unoriginal. They can be worn anytime of the day and on any occasion, both formal or informal. The brands success proves that a watch company can be succesfull even if their watches are simple in design.

Special Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Wall Clocks Auctioned to “Support Japan”

Written by Debbie. Posted in News

In an effort both charitable and creative, Audemars Piguet is auctioning eight stunning, one-of-a-kind Royal Oak Wall Clocks to raise funds in support of ongoing relief work following Japan’s devastating 2011 earthquake.

After the earthquake struck, the North and South American divisions of Audemars Piguet commissioned eight artists to each design a Royal Oak Wall Clock as a gift for the company’s Japanese division. What came out of this project was eight beautiful, unique and inspirational works of art, all set on Audemars Piguet’s iconic and beloved Royal Oak Wall Clock.

The designs all carry significant messages according to the artists’ individual perspectives and reflect the Japanese spirit in some way. One of the clocks, for example, designed by Audemars Piguet’s Chief Artistic Officer Octavio Garcia, features a painting of a Japanese crane, which is commonly recognized as a symbol of hope, happiness and longevity in the country’s culture.

The Royal Oak Wall Clocks were gifted with the intention that the employees of Audemars Piguet Japan could do with the clocks as they saw fit. For some time, the clocks were on display in Audemars Piguet Ginza Boutique in Tokyo, until the division decided to auction them in support of ongoing earthquake relief efforts. The auction began on June 1, 2012 and will continue until July 16 the following month.

Audemars Piguet is currently celebrating the 40-year anniversary of its Royal Oak Wall Clock with a world-touring exhibition. The eight “Support Japan” clocks will be displayed with the exhibition when it comes to Tokyo from July 11 to 16 and will be given to auction winners directly after. The proceeds of the auction will go to the Japan Red Cross Society, contributing to Audemers Piguet Japan’s “Support Japan” initiative to raise 100 million yen (approx. $1.3 million) for the organization.

Royal Oak has become an icon, seen both in watch and clock form from Audemars Piguet. Each of the “Support Japan” clocks features the classic eight screws around the rim of its rounded octagonal shape, two luminescent hands and the Audemars Piguet logo.

Combining great aesthetic and sentimental value, these “Support Japan” clocks are expected to raise substantial amounts for Audemars Piguet Japans’ fundraising initiative. Inspiring hope and emotion, the gifting of these special Royal Oak Wall Clocks has demonstrated Audemars Piguet’s ability to display unity and support amongst its global sectors.

Bell & Ross BR-S Phantom

Written by Debbie. Posted in Bell & Ross, News

The Bell & Ross company originated as a team comprised of an engineer and an aircraft navigation specialist who joined forces to design a high quality timepiece that would be resilient enough for professional use while maintaining the integrity of a superior watch. Many years later, Bell & Ross would be known worldwide as a superior horologist whose timepieces are the top choice for many professionals such as divers, pilots as well as explosive ordinance disposal specialists. Those who are in the line of high pressure work can appreciate the quality, design and functionality of any Bell & Ross timepiece. All watches created by Bell & Ross reflect their four fundamental principles of design: water resistance, precision, performance and reliability.

Recently, Bell & Ross introduced the BR-S Phantom timepiece which is a sleek and stylish women’s watch. This timepiece is not your typical ladies watch with delicate features or loud colors; the BR-S Phantom radiates understated elegance with an ultra-modern look and clean lines. The gorgeous timepiece is available in black or white and ladies have the option of choosing a watch accented with diamonds or a more edgy, minimalist watch without any added extras. The BR-S Phantom has taken the basic ceramic watch to the next level with its monochromatic design and features. The timepiece comes set in either a beautiful stainless steel, ceramic or rubber bracelet. Although the two bracelets differ greatly in appearance, all of the straps perfectly complement the classic ceramic case. As with all of Bell & Ross’ classic timepieces, the BR-S Phantom is water resistant to 150 feet, has Quartz movement and scratch resistant sapphire crystal. The piece measures 39 millimeters by 39 millimeters and can easily be worn for casual days or night out. Arabic numerals are featured at 12, 3 and 9 o’clock with a petite seconds subdial placed at 6 o’clock. The remainder of the dial on the timepiece features luminescent hour indexes that harmonize well with the monochrome theme of the watch. Ceramic watches have gained much popularity as they are heavily scratch-resistant, durable and will not rust like their metal counterparts. Ceramic watches are also very trendy and stylish for the modern man or woman who craves the quality craftsmanship of a luxury watch without the fuss of a highly decorated timepiece. Ladies who desire a minimalist luxury timepiece that can still command attention with its edgy features will appreciate the BR-S Phantom’s unpretentious and super cool manifestation.

Fruitz = Coolest Holiday Watch 2011

Written by watch reviewer. Posted in More News, Philip Stein

It’s official!

The team at BuzzAboutWatches has nominated the Fruitz Watermelon Watch as the Coolest Holiday Watch 2011.

The three reasons attributed to the nomination are as follows:

  • Reason #1:
The colors – a gorgeous green strap and faded red dial will make you smile every time you put this cool piece on.

  • Reason #2:
The Natural Frequency Technology embedded in the watch will keep you cool and calm this holiday season, which could get stressful with all that family around! Also perfect for keeping you relaxed during stressful flights, and prevent jet lag if you’re flying far.

  • Reason #3:
They are super comfortable to wear. The silicon strap and stainless steel case feel cool on your wrist – no need to worry about sweating it up in this watch.

This is not the first time that the Fruitz Watermelon has received a nomination of this type. Globes identified the Fruitz watermelon as the 2011 Summer watch, and JP featured this fun watch for summer beach fashion this year as well. Last year, in June 2010, ABC also showcased the Watermelon Fruitz (see below).

So congratulations to Fruitz watches, and Happy Holidays 2011 to you all!

Movado Hatman Rants about Jews and Israel

Written by watch reviewer. Posted in Movado, News

This past Saturday, a New York City Occupy Wall Street Protestor blamed the Jews and Israel for many US and global issues. When Joe Schoffstall of MRCTV asked a man in a Movado cap for his thoughts on Israel, the madman went on a long rant. How many factual flaws can you find in his long, repetitive, loud, aggressive, and bombastic speech? I found at least 10.

According to the Movado madman:

“Israel is white Eastern European who has preserved and occupied Arab land and they have displaced indigenous, Palestinian people at gunpoint.  When Israel was founded in 1948, in 1949 Israel secretly began working on an atomic nuclear program to wipe out her neighbors.  So the hatred of the Arabs for Israel is understandable. When someone moves on your block, and when they move on the block the very next day they work on weapons of mass destruction to eliminate the neighbors, that would be grounds for justifiable hatred.”

And more…

“Jews control Wall Street. Google ‘Jewish Billionaires,’ Google ‘Jews in the Federal Reserve Bank,’ Google ‘Jews on Wall Street,’ the American finances are controlled by the Jews, Wall Street, the media, the legal profession; Jewish money is the engine in politics, Jews give more money to both the democrat party and the republican party; they also lead the path when it comes to white collar crime. The Jews commit more white collar crime than any other ethnic group on the earth, and they go unprosecuted because they can buy their way out of it, when the Jew gets caught they will pay a civil penalty. So in America, Jews commit more white collar crime; whenever there’s a billion dollar fraud, there’s a Jew involved – and they go unprosecuted or under prosecuted.  Millions of people are suffering because of what the Jews did on Wall Street.

And the Movado hatman goes on…

When it comes to Israel, also, we don’t talk about the fact that Israel also introduced weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. Currently Israel has illegal nuclear weapons, illegal chemical weapons, and illegal biological weapons. Israel intends on wiping out the Middle East so that Israel can wipe out its borders. Why would Israel need 500 nuclear weapons? Google it. Google ‘Israel has 500 nuclear weapons’ –  more nuclear weapons than Great Britain at this time!  So Israel is a very bad neighbor. Who wants to live next to a neighbor that has nuclear, biological and chemical weapons that could wipe out the entire world?
And the United States is afraid of Israel, all the congressman, all the senators are beholden to Jewish money. Because of Jewish money, the republican party and the democrat party allow Israel to go unchecked.”

Man in Movado hat saying antisemitic slurs

Movado's not-so-great brand exposure

So the Movado Madman may not be the best Movado ambassador, but the video of his rant has become a global hit. He definitely scores some points for brand exposure.

Hey, I love Movado watches, so I do feel kind of bad that this fool is wearing their hat.  So, Movado, I will do this for you:  Check out the real Movado ambassadors on the Movado website:  Oh, and if you need a new watch (classy Movado watches make great Christmas gifts), click on this link for amazing deals on Movado watches.  Truth be told, WatchesOnNet really has the best online prices (huge savings off retail prices) on authentic Movado watches – take it from me, I’ve done my research.
