Cartier’s name is synonymous with opulence and success; however this luxury watchmaker fully expects to be less than successful in the coming year.  Sales in the Chinese and Asian markets are expected to fall and in order to counteract that decline in revenue, Cartier watches is rushing to open more designer boutiques in the United States and Middle Eastern countries like India and Iraq.

The CEO, Bernard Fornas won’t say how many stores he will open, but the move is clearly strategic and well thought out.  Currently, Cartier receives close to a quarter of their revenue from their China boutiques, but expect a substantial downturn in 2011 and beyond.  Diversifying is the only smart move in this chess game and Cartier knows it.  Besides, while the Shangai Composite Index is falling, business is booming in the Middle East.

These days many watchmakers are struggling…Movado, for example took the opposite approach; instead of opening additional boutiques in more sustainable areas, they opted to close almost all of their specialty boutiques in 2010.  That move paid off for them and hopefully this risk that Cartier is taking will keep them afloat during these tough economic days.  One thing is clear…only time will tell.

High Quality Watchmakers

What makes a high quality watch?  Is it the name?  Does the Gucci Watches logo mean quality craftsmanship or is the quality of a watch determined by something deeper?  Gucci, Omega, and Cartier are watchmakers that have made a name for themselves, but that name has not made their reputation.  The products they produce and their accuracy and their longevity is part of what gave them their fine reputations.  What’s in a name?  Well, a name is simply a reflection of its reputation and in the watchmaking world…reputation can make or break you. 

The reputation of a watchmaker is created because of their ability to design great looking, well made watches…it’s as simple as that, but that is not so simple for everyone.  Many manufacturers, who are more interested in making a quick buck, will cut corners on quality and craftsmanship. 

It’s not necessary to buy from a watchmaker that has been around for 150 years, but you should make certain that they have enough time under their belts to examine their results.  The watch you choose should be made from durable materials, as well.  Watches aren’t disposable, they are meant to tell time accurately and reliably for many years.  Choose wisely and look deeper than the name.

Scams Taking Your Money

It seems that buying luxury watches on line isn’t as safe as we might have thought.  Even in these days when so many articles are written on the precautions that you should take shopping on the web, apparently the criminals are working overtime.

The most recent scam involves on-line vendors assuming the identity of legitimate business owners in order to obtain credit card numbers and rip off innocent consumers.  This scam is different because instead of just making up a business, these individuals actually hand pick well respected companies and use their good name as the decoy. 

The legitimate watchmakers are having to place alerts on their websites, warning the public of this scam, but other than that…there is very little else that can be done.

The bottom line is that you must be extra careful, who you buy from on the internet.  Even if you are on a site that you believe to be reputable, you simply have to check them out thoroughly, if you don’t want to be taken.  Making sure that all of their contact information matches is a good start.  Calling the company directly, before you order is another great way of determining their authenticity.  The phrase for the day, “Buyer, beware”.
